Belgium Releases New Environmental Rules for Leisure EVs, Phasing Out Lead-Acid Batteries

2026-06-23

Belgium’s Ministry of Transport and Environment officially implemented an environmental bill for low-speed leisure electric vehicles in June, setting strict standards for scenic sightseeing vehicles and community leisure two-wheelers & tricycles. New vehicles fitted with lead-acid batteries are fully banned from registration. All imported leisure vehicles must adopt certified lithium batteries with UN38.3 certification, while heavy metal and plastic VOC levels of all parts comply with strict REACH limits.

Local dealers report that production costs of European domestic leisure vehicles have risen by 35%. Cost-effective Chinese leisure two-wheelers and tricycles with complete certification credentials have become major alternatives, with import orders in Belgium climbing 51% month-on-month in June.
